A day here on Half Acre Homestead

Hello there! Thank you for joining me on this very sunny Friday as I take you through what my day looks like as a young Catholic wife and mother. Personally, I thrive off of this content and love reading it, so I hope it can be inspirational in some way shape or form, even if it is through my mistakes! I am considering starting a young Catholic married couples and parents YouTube podcast so if that is something you would be interested in, please drop a comment and stay tuned!

Currently I am six months postpartum and really am feeling very much myself lately. My day-to-day routine is more active and cheerful than it has been in a long time; motherhood is a huge learning curve, and it has taken me a while to find joy in every day, but my reminder to myself is that Christ is always present in every day, and that is consoling to know I have Jesus, Mary and the Guardian Angels always with me.

The day starts off reasonably early, I get up at about 6:45 am and shower and make myself a cup of coffee with our fancy espresso machine, and I have some breakfast. I generally am keeping an eye on the clock so that I am observing the 1-hour Communion fast as we typically attend daily Mass at 8 am. Still being postpartum, but also for the reason that I require proper nourishment to function, I usually try to make sure my breakfast is fairly nutritional. My hubby often makes it for me which is very sweet and a task off of my plate. Mornings are busy here! Babykins wakes up around 7:20 like clockwork every morning, I feed and change her, and we go to Mass. Church is only 10 minutes away, so this is still very feasible to do. While I generally spend the entire Mass in the cry room, it is still spiritually nourishing to be there in the mornings.

After Mass, we head back home where Babykins requires food again, and she takes a nap for several hours. She is a sleepy girl and functions best with plenty of sleep! At this point, I usually make breakfast for my husband if he is not at work, we feed our chickens, and I start my housework, which involves tidying up bathrooms, bedrooms and the morning dishes.

Laundry needs run at least every other day, so that is always a part of my life! I still haven’t figured out a really functional way to store my clean laundry, so I am still trying to figure out good ideas for that. Occasionally when I remember and the weather is nice, I hang the wet laundry on the line and it saves a tiny bit on the electric bill.

If I have time after all that is done and Babykins is still sleeping, I usually head out to the gardens to weed and re-plant, or I pursue a personal project of my own. Currently I am working on a wedding veil for a client, and that has been very enjoyable to work on with a cup of coffee next to me!

Lunch is typically very laid back; we usually do leftovers and snacks.

Babykins usually wakes up right around lunch, and we often go for a walk or run errands around this time. We live in a very quiet neighborhood with a lot of lovely neighbors, so walks are very enjoyable! After errands or a walk, we usually play for a little while before dinner needs prepped. She is in a crawl/scooting stage, so she really needs kept an eye on and entertained. Her recent love is any cords or wires she sees, so we have to be diligent in keeping all of that away from her.

At 3 pm when I remember, we try to pray the Divine Mercy chaplet.

Closer to dinner time, she either goes back down for another nap, this time a pretty short one, or I will put her in a baby backpack, and she naps there while I prep dinner.

Dinners are reasonably simple, but I try to put delicious recipes on the menu. We bought some new cookbooks recently, “Natasha’s Kitchen” which is WONDERFUL, “The Wellness Mama”, which is great for both healthy and delicious meals, and “Around the Catholic table” which incorporates Catholic concepts into meals. Recently I am trying to focus on less carbs and more meat and veggie style dinners. It’s truly very fun to experiment with different recipes, and it adds variety to meals at night which can be uplifting especially on hard days. I try to not repeat meals that were only subpar or straight out disliked. It is important for food to be enjoyed and taste good.

We try to keep wine in the house, so we often can add that to a meal to make it feel upscale.

After dinner we generally pray the Rosary as a family right away. We used to wait until before bed to do it, but we often ended up exhausted and dragging our feet to pray, so now we make a pot of tea and pray right after dinner.

We generally then go on a walk (we call it our evening constitutional) and often some local friends join us, and we have some pleasant evening socialization. Babykins adores walks and loves just looking at the scenery and being outdoors. She either rides in her stroller or I snuggle her into her baby back-pack.

After the walk, she gets a bath, fed, and we recite the Guardian Angel prayer with her, we bless her and then she goes to bed for the night. She is a very good bedtime baby and snuggles right into bed and goes to sleep quickly. I try to let her have a long stretch in between bedtime and naps, so she is generally tired out from playing and wants to go to sleep.

I then load up the dishwasher while hubby does the chicken and outside chores, then we both shower, read for a bit, and head off to bed. Thankfully Babykins is sleeping through the night, so we both get plenty of rest every night, which is a crazy blessing, as neither of us do well at all with sleep deprivation!

This is what a typical day looks like for us! It is occasionally filled with friend visits or dinner parties with close friends, so we have all kinds of variety.

Deo gratias for such a lovely life! Thank you for following along with me for our typical day blog post. Stay tuned for more!
